Brow Mapping - Why is it so hard?

Do you struggle with the Brow Mapping Process when trying to create the most beautiful brows for your clients?

There may be a number of reasons why you are struggling. Some I can help with, some are a matter of hardwork and practice on your part.

Here are some of the main reasons you may sometimes struggle with brow mapping:

  1. Lack of Training: Permanent makeup is a specialised skill that requires proper training and education. You may not receive adequate training in brow mapping, which is a crucial step in creating natural-looking results. Ask you trainer for support as your first port of call. You can ask for help by joining our dedicated Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/pmufocus

  2. Inadequate Experience: Brow mapping requires practice and experience to perfect. If you are a new artist, you may struggle with accuracy and precision, leading to subpar results and not very flattering shapes for your clients.

  3. Varied Client Preferences: Clients have diverse preferences when it comes to eyebrow shapes and styles. You may struggle with brow mapping because you feel that you must adapt to individual client preferences and features, making it a complex and subjective process. If a client really wants an unflattering shape you are within your right to refuse.

  4. Face Shape Knowledge: Brow mapping involves taking into consideration the client's face shape, bone structure, and facial symmetry. Artists who lack a deep understanding of facial anatomy may struggle with creating balanced and flattering brow designs. This knowledge will be included in the forthcoming - Brow Mapping Wizardry! which is an online interactive modular course being released in Dec 2023.

  5. Communication Skills: Effective communication with clients is essential in understanding their expectations and creating a brow shape that suits them. Some artists may struggle with this aspect, leading to misunderstandings and unsatisfactory results. Consultation is an essential part of the PMU treatment and I will be doing a live Facebook Seminar about Consultation for effective PMU treatments - "Unveil the Power of PMU Consultations: Unlock the Secrets & Master the Essential Elements for Tailoring Perfect Treatment Plans!"

  6. Lack of Tools and Techniques: Permanent makeup artists use various tools and techniques for brow mapping. Not having access to the right tools or not being familiar with the latest techniques can hinder the mapping process. Use this link to check out my free PDF download - Brow Mapping Magic that shows all my favourite equipment, along with hints and tips.

  7. Pressure and Nervousness: Creating permanent makeup can be a high-stakes procedure, as mistakes can be difficult to correct. The pressure and nervousness that some artists experience can lead to difficulties in accurately mapping the brows. This only gets better with practice. I recommend only booking a couple of clients a day initially and ensure that you leave about 3 1/2 hours to begin with so you can take your time going over the consultation and treatment planning, take lots of 'before' photo's, take your time mapping, no pressure to complete the treatment to a tight schedule (also ensure that your client has allocated a enough time for the appointment and put adequate amount on their parking ticket!). Then you'll have plenty of time for creating good 'after' pictures. Finally take your time thoroughly explaining the aftercare. I also give my a client a branded postcard to take away with a summary of the do's/don'ts of post treatment care. (These can be purchased from my shop and I will brand them for you - https://www.pmufocus.com/product-page/pmu-brow-postcard ).

If you finish early , treat yourself to a cuppa, deep clean your room and prepare some social media :)

  1. Evolving Trends: Brow shapes and makeup trends evolve over time. Artists who do not keep up with the latest trends may find it challenging to create the desired look for their clients. I recommend that once you have mastered the basic of brow mapping ensure that you keep up to date with trends. However, do be cautious of passing fads in the Industry, some things should not be tattooed on a face!

  2. Learn to draw: You don't have to be Leonardo DiVinci, but you should master basic drawing and colour skills to support your PMU career. I strongly advise against the use of stencils, there is no one-size-fits-all shape when it comes to individuals. I strongly believe that is you can't draw a half decent brow on a client then you should definitely not be tattooing one yet.

To overcome these challenges, you should invest in ongoing training, gain experience, and focus on honing your skills. You should also prioritise effective communication with clients and stay updated on industry trends and techniques. Additionally, digital brow mapping aids can help improve accuracy and consistency in brow mapping, there are many apps available.

Being honest with you - it takes practice and lots of it. Once you have the knowledge of the brow mapping basics, you'll need to practice. With experience, and from my own experience, you will find the process quicker and easier over time. I have prepared a completely free downloadable PDF - Brow Mapping Magic!
